Occasionally,
and with increasing frequency, lists of all types are being produced and then offered on websites, email lists, television monologues etc. In keeping with the times here is a list I like a lot.
American Oceans Campaign, Bay Keeper, Coalition for Clean Air, Defenders of Wildlife, Environmental Defense, Friends of the Earth, Green Cross, Heal the Bay, Institute for Sustainable Forestry, Natural Resources Defense Council, National Wildlife Federation, Ocean Conservation Society, Pesticide Watch, Physicians for Social Responsibility, Rainforest Action Network, World Watch, Zero Population Growth.
Read the list three times and you will begin to hear a common theme. The name is the story - the organization has been created to protect oceans, birds, air, bays, wildlife, health, rainforest, trees - the other organizations defend, protect, conserve, watch, and act responsibility on behalf of all of us. The name says it all.
Each group is in service to the earth and the earth's inhabitants - all inhabitants.
Service to self must be replaced with service to the earth and all therein. Daily we must encourage one another to give part of our time talent and treasure to the building up of the fragile island home we have inherited.
A good place to start is to learn from the environmental group nearby. Support if you must an organization that represents your passion, but also do not neglect the local group that is fighting for something in your own backyard.
