DOING SOMETHING ABOUT THE WEATHER
JANUARY 31, 2006

I talked with my brother Jay in Annapolis Maryland one morning not too long ago. It was 4 degrees when he got up. It was 12 degrees when we were on the phone. He was complaining about the weather, though I thought it was cold because when I got up it was 48 and when we were talking it was 62 degrees.

Everyone since the beginning of time has talked about the weather, but has thrown up their collective hands saying there is nothing we can do about it. Wrong!

The whole world should be concerned about weather because the climate is changing rapidly, and there is something we can do about it, now!

When I was a boy my elders told me I could not doing anything about the weather - just learn to adapt and roll with it. Today the current administration is basically saying the same thing about global warming and climate change. I do not accept the position of acquiescing to the don't worry about it folks who basically want to maintain the status quo.

Climate change is real and the human family is causing the changes. Everyone of us who drive a car, ride in a plane, and consume resources is part of the problem. By altering behavior patterns we can become part of the solution. We can do something about the weather if governments and individuals have the will power to make different behavioral choices.

What can I choose to do that will mitigate global warming or make a difference in my own weather?

  1. Carpool more often.
  2. Walk more.
  3. Use energy efficient appliances.
  4. Buy fuel efficient cars.
  5. Change diet give up meat.

Please email me with your suggestions and I will print them and give you credit for your good ideas. Unless we do something about the weather, who will?
